ABOUT EMMA

Emma Hayes – BSc (Chiro) MMCA ITEC Dip

Emma started her Reiki journey in 2000 with her Reiki master and friend Linda Holmes. In 2008 Emma became attuned to the second degree with Diana Savil, another wonderful soul, and in 2018 became a Reiki Master Teacher under the guidance, wisdom and teaching of Linda Holmes.

During the years she trained to be a chiropractor, Emma had many jobs dealing with different aspects of health; a health care assistant in a psychiatric hospital, a support worker of young adults with autism and then a teaching assistant in a special school. Emma qualified as Chiropractor in 2004 and since then has trained in several therapies, including massage, medical acupuncture and Emmett Technique. Emma is also a member of the Reiki Federation. Emma has a specialist interest in pregnancy care and her experience in energy medicine; Reiki and Emmett Technique enable her to help people suffering stress and anxiety. Her Chiropractic clinic ‘The Chiropractic Room’ was based within a GP practice in Tunbridge Wells for 12 years but now ‘The Chiropractic Room’ and ‘The Reiki Room’ are part of an integrated therapy centre (also in Tunbridge Wells) where Emma works alongside an osteopath and sports massage therapist, as well as her chiropractic associates. Emma is a Reiki Master teacher and she lives with her family in Tunbridge Wells and is well known in the local and surrounding community.

WHAT IS REIKI?

Reiki is a Japanese word which, when translated, means ‘Universal Life Energy’ (Rei – universal, Ki – energy). This is the natural energy which is around and within each of us. It is the energy that enlivens and animates matter.

For thousands of years, cultures across the globe have held the knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected directly to health. Eastern medicine recognises and works with energy (Ki – Japanese, Chi – Mandarin, Prana – Hindu/ Sanskrit) or ‘life force’. Reiki uses this energy (Ki) to stimulate the body in its own natural healing process, increasing energy flow throughout the body.

Reiki is an ancient form of healing – a powerful system that unlocks the vital flow of energy from the sender to the receiver. It allows the sender to tune in to the universal life force and to channel this energy to the recipient.

The practice of Reiki focuses the energy and directs it through the hands of the practitioner or sender. This concentrated flow of energy accelerates the healing and balancing of mind, body and spirit. It is very simple and non-obtrusive, usually given with the recipient lying fully clothed.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A SESSION?

Emma is a therapist who usually uses several techniques when she cares for her patients. You can visit The Chiropractic Room website for further information. However when a patient seeks Reiki as a ‘stand alone’ treatment, Reiki can be described as “non-diagnostic, non-interventionist, non-manipulative and no pressure is applied.” (The Reiki Federation UK)

Emma will always take a case history prior to discussing treatment options with you. The Reiki Room is GDPR compliant. A treatment plan will be discussed and agreed with you, and reviewed as necessary. This will always be subject to your own preferences, and can be changed at any time in line with progress.

A session is usually carried out with the recipient lying down, or sitting, in a comfortable and peaceful environment. There is usually no need to remove any clothing as Reiki energy passes easily through all materials, including plaster casts.

Emma places her hands gently on or over the body on the chakra centres; there is no massage or manipulation. Reiki can also be given over a distance. For example if a patient is too far away or too poorly to attend the appointment in person, Emma can send Reiki over distance.

Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, mild tingling, warmth, coolness, other sensations, or nothing at all. The length of a Reiki session may vary, but will usually be half to one hour in duration.

Emma is registered with the Reiki federation and CNHC.

THE HISTORY OF REIKI

We know that Reiki was recorded in ancient Sanskrit texts. These were rediscovered and developed by Dr Mikao Usui (Usui Sensai), a Professor of Theology, during the late 1800s in Japan. Dr Usui was on his own spiritual quest for enlightenment and he spent years studying. In March 1922, after fasting for 21 days, a powerful light suddenly entered his mind and he felt as if he had been struck by lightning; this caused him to fall unconscious.

As the sun rose, he awoke and realised that, whereas before he had felt very weak and near death from his fasting, he was now filled with an extremely enjoyable state of vitality that he had never experienced before; a miraculous type of high frequency spiritual energy had displaced his normal consciousness and replaced it with an amazing new level of awareness. He experienced himself as being the energy and consciousness of the Universe, and that the special state of enlightenment he had sought had been given to him as a gift.

Usui Sensei was filled with excitement and went running down the mountain to tell his Zen master of his great experience. On his way down he stubbed his toe on a rock and fell. He placed his hands over the painful toe and as he did this, healing energy began flowing from his hands all by itself. The pain in his toe went away and the toe was healed. Usui Sensei was amazed by this. He realized that in addition to the illuminating experience he had undergone, he had also received the gift of healing. He also understood that this was his life purpose; to be a healer and to train others.

Demand for Reiki became so great that Usui Sensei outgrew his original clinic and in 1925 he built a bigger one in Tokyo. Because of this, his reputation as a healer spread all over Japan. He began to travel so he could teach and treat more people.

Reiki became widespread and popular in Japan. In the 1960’s Reiki was brought to the West by a woman called Hawayo Takata, and it has continued to grow in popularity throughout the West. There are now many different branches of Reiki Usui Reiki (Western reiki) Jikiden Reiki (Eastern|), Karuna Reiki, Lightarian Reiki, Sekeham or Seichim Reiki, Rainbow Reiki, Kundalini Reiki and Tera Mai Reiki.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND REIKI

There has been scientific research into Reiki and how it works. According to The Reiki Federation in the UK:

“When giving Reiki, practitioners have been shown to emit electro-magnetic or bio-magnetic energy from their hands. The frequencies of the energy emitted vary from one moment to the next; but many appear to correspond to those that medical researchers have identified as being the optimum frequencies for stimulating the healing process in tissues, bones and other body parts so far investigated.

• The bio-magnetic energy (or field) flowing from a practitioner’s hands has been shown to induce current flows in the tissues/cells of individuals who are in close proximity but this pulsing energy is not produced by non-practitioners of energy healing techniques.

Two ways in which these pulsing magnetic fields may stimulate repair of bone and other tissues include:

• A cascade of reactions take place from the cell surface to the cytoplasm and on to the nucleus and genes, where selective effects on the DNA have been documented.

• A phenomenon called amplification, in which a single hormone molecule, neurotransmitter or photon of electromagnetic energy has been shown to trigger a cellular response; and in fact very tiny fields have been shown to produce the best effects, suggesting that living tissues are much more sensitive to external fields than previously considered possible.”

CAN I LEARN TO GIVE REIKI?

Yes! You can. Although a special initiation is necessary to become attuned to the Reiki energy, anyone can learn Reiki. This initiation attunement can only be performed by a Reiki Master (teacher).

Emma is a Reiki Master teacher and provides Reiki courses and attunements. If you would like to start your own Reiki journey get in touch with Emma to find out more information and find out when the next Reiki course starts.

Reiki is not a spiritual belief system and does not contradict any individual religious beliefs.
